Glasgow Youth People Get Fit with ZigZag

The word youth club has taken on a whole new meaning at Ibrox Community Complex in Glasgow. Instead of hanging out, listening to music, eating crisps and downing fizzy drinks, the young people are getting fit with ZigZag’s Circuit.

In partnership with the education department, the Ibrox Community Trust Complex, operated by Cultural & Leisure Services, brought to install its Circuit range of cardio-vascular and resistance training equipment, and it’s proved a big hit with the centre’s young people.

“Ours was the first specialised fitness facility for young people in Glasgow,” said Alan Milner, Area Service Development Manager. “Young people have the opportunity to use the gym three times a week at designated times or alternatively link up with other community group sessions. The Youth Club has recently introduced this as part of its programme of activities, and it’s always busy, particularly with the 11-12 year olds.”

Plans are currently being finalised to team up with the local education department to develop a fully utilised programme from 9am – 3pm every day.

“It’s our intention to offer all local schools the opportunity to access the equipment, in an effort to motivate and encourage healthier lifestyles in line with ‘The Health Improving Schools’ theme. We will eventually extend this to secondary schools too,” said Alan. “The only problem is finding enough time for everyone to get their hour session in, so we’re going to train teachers and learning support assistants so that the schools can be more self sufficient and use the equipment outside of the core school hours.”
